I live around Corpus Christi Texas and in south Texas we don’t really have blisteringly cold winters, but that also means that when it gets below 70 Degrees outside people bust out their Parkas, gloves, boots, and beanies. Anywhere else in the world 70 degree weather would be lovely shorts and t-shirt weather. Even though we are “Babies” when it comes to the colder weather months this doesn’t mean that you can’t plan a fabulous family session or even wrangle the kids for a session.
I personally love colder weather to shoot sessions in. I’m normally a jean and boots wearing kinda girl, so slapping on a sweater or light jacket is awesome for me. Here are some other reasons why I love winter sessions:
- The landscape is a little more bare and more beautiful then normal. Having a background that doesn’t demand attention can make YOU as my subject be the main focus in an image and will make you and your family POP.
- The colors are naturally warmer and and look cozy. If you are wanting a greener spring time image this can easily be achieved in post processing of the image by adjusting the greens in editing software.
- People naturally squeeze together when its cold. Couples, siblings, and larger family can cuddle under a blanket or simply wrap their arms around each other and snuggle up for warmth. This creates really cute intimate moments within your family.
- Wardrobe- like mentioned earlier, I’m a jean and boot wearing little lady. I love using layers to create texture in an image, hats and scarves are a great accessory for children, as well as the use of gloves and coats to create those cozy warm images. I also dig collars that stick up to give a bit of “Grit” to an everyday boy next door.
So don’t be afraid of a bit of cold and grab your family and snuggle up for a session. Use lots of layers, the more the merrier when dealing with children. You can always take a few off if they are running around and warm up a bit. Use sweaters, gloves, scarves, hats, and boots; these are great accessories when creating a wardrobe for your session. Even if you have a dress all picked out for your little princess, if you simply pair the dress with some stockings and a light sweater it can make a world of difference. I always suggest alternate outfits and blankets for little ones when dealing with the cold. At the end of the day what I’m trying to say is snuggle up and get cozy with your loved ones!!
